Ty Gibbs Wins Sioux Chief PowerPex 200, Sam Mayer Captures Sioux Chief Showdown Championship

MILLINGTON, Tenn. — Ty Gibbs won the battle by winning the Sioux Chief PowerPEX 200, but it was Sam Mayer won the war by capturing the inaugural Sioux Chief Showdown Championship Saturday at Memphis International Raceway. 

Gibbs, the driver of the No.18 Monster Energy/ Terrible Herbst/Orca Coolers/ Toyota, and started from pole position at the 0.75-mile tri-oval for the Sioux Chief PowerPEX 200. Gibbs took the lead with 47 laps to go driving around the outside of Bret Holmes. From there Gibbs never looked back winning the race.

“This really means a lot, we struggled a lot and never gave up today,” an excited Ty Gibbs said. “I felt like I had a shot and I wanted to win so bad here in Memphis.”

When all was said and done Sam Mayer emerged from the Sioux Chief PowerPEX 200 as the inaugural Sioux Chief Showdown Champion by finishing second in the race after getting penalized for changing two tires prior to the start of the race.

“We didn’t win the battle, but we won the war,” a jubilant Sam Mayer said. “We corded a right-front tire on the first run which made us nervous. We were cutting it close and we ended winning the Sioux Chief Showdown Championship.” 

Sam Mayer came home second, Bret Holmes finished third, Thad Moffit finished fourth and Chandler Smith rounded out the top-5.
